Bang the Table has made it into the auspicious pages of the Australian Financial Review. Under the heading, “Ratepayers Gain Outlet for Grievances”, writer Christopher Jay talks about Bang the Table’s experience helping local government to take its consultation processes online. My favourite line is the quote from Gosford City Council’s Gary Chestnut; “By using … Continue reading

Here’s a mantra for writing web content: long, long, short, short, short, short, short. Would your auntie understand what you’ve written? If not, fix these problems first. Long, clear, informative … Continue reading
Providing Community with a Level Playing Field
I get my greatest kicks from being able to positively influence planning and achieve great outcomes that everyone in the community has played a part in. But over the 16 years that I’ve worked in local government, I think it’s getting harder and harder to reach people using only traditional face to face methods. And … Continue reading

FLOSS stands for Free Libre Open Source Software, commonly also referred to as FOSS. The Libre is to emphasize the freedom … Continue reading

There is much more to a successful online consultation than having a pretty website. Yes, a site needs to look smart and deliver the goods design-wise, but with the main objective being to rally community participation, it’s crucial that you deliver a site based on sound methodology and highly engaging content. Of course, there is … Continue reading

Using Facebook and Twitter for Community Engagement
I gave this presentation at the Australian Marketing Institute Conference on 3 September. It deliberately goes back to basics and drills below the strategic to give some hands on tips. As always with presentations it is the words rather than the slides that set the context so I have added a few key points below … Continue reading
