The City of Red Deer, in Alberta Canada, this weeks launched its online community engagement portal, Let’s Talk Red Deer, by asking the community to talk about parks, specifically the the parks that make up its Draft River Valley & Tributaries Park Concept Plan.
The City of Red Deer is the second local government Bang the Table has had the good fortune to work with in Canada, following on from their northern neighbours, Edmonton. This time we’re working in working with the folk at Sustainet, our local distribution partners.
I’m not sure if it’s coincidence, or particularly keen foresight borne of the cold weather – I was there in January, I know how cold it gets! See photographic evidence below – but its noteworthy that the first two Councils to take up online forums are from the great province of Alberta.

Council have launched the portal by asking their community to..
“Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s have a chat. There’s a lot going on in our community right now, and we’d love to pick your brain. We understand that you’re busy with school or kids or work, and sometimes, you just can’t make it out to an open house to tell us what’s on your mind.
That’s okay; our interactive forum here is going to make it easier for you to keep in touch. With pictures, information, and lively discussion about a variety of City projects, this site will allow you to get involved in City initiatives from the comfort of your home.”
Now, I don’t believe that this sort of commonsense is unique to Albertians? What’s happening in the rest of Canada? It’ll be great to watch the conversation develop.
