Your Health: Australian Government Online Consultation about Healthcare Reform

Earlier this week I met up with Craig Thomler, the man behind Gov 2.0 blog eGov and the online component of the current Australian government consultation into major reform of the national health care system. The site has been badged, YourHealth, as is worth a look.

There are a few notables about the site that I particularly like.

1. There are four ways to make a contribution: By making a policy statement using the “tell us what you think” function; by providing a “story”; by responding to the site blog; or by submitting a video.

I particularly like the opportunity to submit a video. As any regular readers of this blog will know, it is something of a fixation for me! So I’ll take the opportunity to say it again here… we – as in the community engagement profession – need to start embracing video as a communications tool both for delivering information to our stakeholders, and as a legitimate submission mode. It is too easy, ubiquitous, cheap and accessible to ignore.

2. It has a nice little mashup map showing the number of made using each medium by state.

3. It has another nice little mashup map showing the location of each of the physical consultations.

I understand that all of the comments are pre-moderated, which while not my preference, is understandable for a government and agency still coming to terms with social media as an engagement tool.

It would have been nice to see a forum in there somewhere so that our citizens could engage in their own dialogue about the issues… all good things come in time.

One Response to Your Health: Australian Government Online Consultation about Healthcare Reform

  1. Great post! Healthcare the world over seems much more of an illusion, for far too many people that need it.
